Pizza And Wine

We love pizza. We also love wine. We are guessing that you love them too. Together, they make a night in that we don’t even consider a guilty pleasure any more. Here are 5 pizza and wine pairings that will rock your socks off.

Plain Cheese Pizza with Red Sauce - Sangiovese

The tomatoes in the sauce are acidic and should be matched with acidic wine. Sangiovese is a red Italian grape with high acidity. It’s usually medium-bodied, and the tannins in Sangiovese can stand up to the richness of cheese.

Pepperoni Pizza - Rhône-style Blend

The heat in pepperoni allows for spiciness in wine to shine. Try a either Syrah or Grenache. These wines have a flavor that will complement the pepperoni, along with plenty of acidity and tannin. You especially want to check out these wines from France or Australia.

Vegetable Pizza - Chardonnay

This is a chance to let white wine be the star with pizza. A full bodied and dry Chardonnay would match the richness of the cheese and complement the vegetables. We would suggest keeping an eye out for a white Burgundy or Chardonnay from California.

Mushroom Pizza - Red Burgundy

The earthiness of mushrooms is perfect with the dry savory complexity of red Burgundy. Red Burgundy is made from Pinot Noir even when it doesn’t say so on the label.

Sausage Pizza - Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet is a rockstar when it comes to sausage pizza due to its full body and tannins. This wine matches the meatiness while its acidity cuts through the richness of the meat and cheese combination.
